Magazine Analysis 2

This image is of the cover of Empire. Empire is an established from magazine. This edition of the magazine is about the second film in the Batman instalment entitled: The Dark Knight Rises. This main cover mainly focuses on the antagonist The Joker. From looking at this over it is clear that the magazine has based its colour scheme and typography on the appearance and the personality of this character.
The first thing that attracts me to the cover of this photograph is the bold and bright colour scheme that has been used in contrast to the darker background. The use of the green and purple tones and colours used relates back to the costume of the Joker. These colours are an icon of the character and form an association with the modern and older portrayal of this character. The green and purple colours work well together and make each other stand out- these colours also emphasise the characters costume in the image. As well as these bright colours that relate to the characters costume, the font colour used for the title of the magazine emphasise and makes the red face paint on the character stand out more and look stronger. The red colour for the title connotes danger and death- this relates back to the character of the antagonist. The fact that the joker has been overlaid on top of the title infers that this is the most important element of the cover and that this character is more important than the name of the magazine. The small barcode has been placed along the bottom so it doesn't ruin the imagery. This placement also makes the audience want to buy the magazine because of the image not the price.
The imagery used in this cover is quite strong and is a classic pose used for an antagonist. The shoot looks very simplistic and infers that the character is the most important part of the over. From looking at the background of the image I can see bars which could suggest  prison or entrapment theme. This sort of theme is conventional in a superhero film. To further support and emphasise the theme of superheroes, the Batman symbol has been use in the top centre of the cover. This iconography exhibits to the audience that there is always a hero when there is a villain.

In order to draw the audience and the reader into buying this magazine they have used syntax which will convince and persuade the reader to buy this magazine. For example along the top of the cover Empire have said "world exclusive". This statement infers to the audience that if they buy this magazine they will be receiving some rare content about the film, cast or characters. From looking at the slogans and titles that have been used in this cover I can infer that this cover shoot was an introduction to the antagonist. For example the slogan "one on one with Batman's new nemesis" this infers to the audience that this is a new villain.
In order to hint at the character of this villain a quote about the character has been used in order to introduce and hint at his personality, "He's a cold blooded, mass murdering clown". The typography used for this description looks as if it has been scratched in with a knife. This font choice infers that he is dangerous and deadly.

Poster mock up 2

This is the second poster mock, however this is the most unsuccessful as it is quite simplistic and doesn't really offer any information to the audience as to who's in it and when it will be released.

Poster mock up 3

Poster mock up 1

I created this poster mock up on photoshop using previous images from a photography photo shoot. I placed Katherine in the centre of the poster to connote to the audience that she is the key and main protagonist not necessarily in the entire film but in the trailer. I decided to cut Alfie's head in half and place it on either side of her in order to slightly conceal his identity and to show the audience that the antagonist is constantly surrounding Katherine.

Magazine Analysis 1

This is a film poster for the first Hobbit film entitled The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey. This cover for the magazine is for the well known film magazine called Empire.
The first thing that attracts me to this magazine cover is the strong and bold image which has been contrasted well with the bright and golden title. The title of this magazine follows the conventions of what is expected from a cover as the title is at the top of the page and is in bold lettering. The subtile of this magazine cover also is in the same colour which shows that they relate and makes the magazine look professional.
The gold colouring for the font is very regal and gives the impression that this is an established magazine and is well known in the film industry. The gold colouring on the title  could also reality to the narrative and the film of choice of the magazine.

The small barcode at the bottom left hand side of the poster could be small so the reader is more attracted to the title rather than being put of by the price of the magazine. By having the barcode smaller it allows the image to take over the cover and become the main image. If the barcode was any larger it would ruin the overall appearance of the cover.

The image that has been used for the magazine cover is a image from the film or trailer of the film. This cover photo that has been used for the magazine relates back to the narrative and the key characters that are associated with the film franchise. The main character is featured on this cover. The character is played by martin freeman who is an established actor in the film industry and is known for his role in this film. By having this on the front cover it attracts his fans to watch the film and buy this poster to receive any extra information about the actor or the film itself. The inclusion of the Gollum character in that background emphasises the franchise and the character who are typically associated with the film. By this character being included in the shoot creates hype for the film as an old character has been brought back and reintroduced into the newer and current film. The tone of the image connotes a dramatic and dark atmosphere due to the tones of grey and dark blue in tandem with the low key lighting. This is well contrasted with the bright gold lettering.

The typography used along the bottom of the article relates back to the narrative and the location of which the story is based around. This slogan along the bottom entices the reader and encourages them to open the magazine and read the article. The use of the ellipsis on "inside" hints to the reader that they have more to say about the franchise and that they may have some special information.
The layout of the image over the title of the magazine connotes that the character is more important than the magazine. This layout also adds another dimension to the magazine and infers that the character is real.
In order to relate back to the film and one of the significant characters that makes the franchise well known the magazine has used a tagline and slogan along the top of the poster. This tagline is above the title therefore it will be one of the first things that the reader will see.
The use of the pun "precious exclusive" exhibits the relation to the narrative and the characters in this narrative. By using the word exclusive it will automatically entrance the reader into finding out extra information. The purpose of this tagline creates intrigue for the audience.

Poster analysis 3

This is the film poster for the 2015 thriller film entitled The Boy Next Door. The lead role and protagonist is played by Jennifer Lopez.
This is one of the main poster used for the advertisement of this film. There is another similar poster to this one however this one includes the antagonist rather than just the protagonist. The layout of this poster follows the typical institutional film poster layout. For example the typography and the institutional information is along the bottom of the poster. The conventions are also followed by having the lead actors name across the top of the poster in larger writing so it stands out to the viewer. As the lead actress in this film is Jennifer Lopez, she is well known actress and singer therefore she will attract attention and draw her established fan base into watching the film
The typography used for the titles and film name is very bold and in block capital letters stand out out well and will catch the audiences eye. The colour of the typography is a mixture of black and white which show a strong contrast and could represent the antagonist and the protagonist as they are on opposite sides of the spectrum.

The imagery used in this poster features the main characters- the antagonist and protagonist. The image used is the protagonist looking out of her window and the shot angle is a long shot as it features the majority of her body. The shot used has a purplish and blue tone to the photograph. This tone of filter gives the impression that we are looking into the window at her. This gives an inclusive tone to the image for the audience and makes them feel more involved in the storyline. The costume that the protagonist is wearing is a silky night gown which shows connotations that this movie was filmed at night. The nighttime setting and lighting follows the conventions of a thriller film. The colour of the nightgown that she is wearing which is a white/ baby pink connotes innocence as she is the victim in this film.
The image of the protagonist is lager which shows the importance of this character in comparison to the smaller antagonist image.
The image of the antagonist is featured n the poster in the bottom right corner. However the shot used of this character does not connote or show any signs of being an antagonist. However the image relates well to the narrative and the title of the film therefore the audience will make the correct association.
The star system used for this film is quite prominent as Jennifer Lopez is well known in the industry and including an image of heron the poster will convince fans to view the film.

As well as this poster another one was used less in order to advertise and market the film. This is the second poster used. This is a very simplistic and minimal poster and just includes the title. This poster is one that I don't think it is very good for advertising as it doesn't give any information about the release date etc. The fonts used for this poster is white and creates a strong juxtaposition and contrast in comparison to the black background.

Poster Analysis 2

This is a film poster for the 2015 film Martian. This film is a space themed film and the main role is played by Matt Damon. This is one of the main posters used for the advertisement of the film. This poster is similar to the second copy however this one is more simplistic. The main purpose of this poster is to create a buzz for the upcoming film and to peak the audience's interest. From looking at this poster I can say that this imagery is quite powerful and exhibits to the audience that the image used for the poster is all they need to know about the film instead of typography detailing. An audience that would go to see this film would most likely be a fan of sci fi and space films and therefore would expect pleasures from that genre of film.

This poster and layout is one that is conventional in the industry and that is used for film posters. It includes the typography along the bottom perimeter of the poster. Also included is the main title of the film and a slogan. However the typography used in this poster subverts the conventions of film posters in the industry as the slogan used to describe the narrative is larger than the main title font. This connotes to the audience that this slogan is an important message for the film and plays a key part in the narrative. The typography used for the film is very simplistic and the colour tone used in neutral which makes it stand out and poop against the background image.
The background image used for to advertise for this film is a powerful image. It features Matt Damon as the main character. The costume he is wearing exhibits his profession and occupation of his character in the film. The image used for this poster is very simple and exhibits to the audience the main character of the film. when the audience see the actors face on this poster it would convince and encourage them to see the film.In this photograph the landscape of mars has been added in on certain areas of the helmet. This hints at the narrative and the location used in the film.
The costuming used for this poster exhibits a semantic field of space and astrology. The high key lighting used in this image is very bright and could connote a realistic atmosphere.

These two posters are also ones that have been created for in order to advertise and create excitement for the film. These two posters follow and exhibit the narrative more for the audience. It helps to give the audience hints as to what the film is about. These images are also more detailed and included more techniques in order to portray the meaning of the narrative. The first image exhibits  skill in photoshop which includes an image overlay effect. Both of these images follow the space connotation as there is a red tone which relates back to the mars location used for the narrative.

Poster analysis 1

Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This is the main poster that has been used for marketing purposes for the new Star Wars film. The main purpose for this film poster is to evoke the audiences interest in the film and cause excitement for the new up coming instalment of the saga. From looking at the poster I can see that this poster is aimed at fans from the previous franchise and its spin off productions. People who would go and see this film would expect Sci Fi and fantasy pleasures.
In the poster for this film the release date, title and tagline are positioned at the bottom of the poster. The information is aligned in the centre of the poster. This layout is conventional for film posters and the way they are presented in the industry. The title of the film is the predominant typography that can be seen on the poster. The main title 'Star Wars' is exhibited in a larger font. This helps to promote the Star Wars is a franchise and this title automatically attracts audiences from the previous films that have been made and well loved. The typography that has been used in the poster is the font and style that is conventionally and is recognisable for the Star Wars franchise and makes the film unique and distinguishable.

The background used for the image on this poster is a dark background which symbolises space and the night sky. Having this follows the conventions of a sci fi film. The dark background used in this movie poster is contrasted and juxtaposed against the bright, bold and neon colours used in the foreground focal image. From looking at this photograph I can see that this image has been put together and adjusted on photoshop in order to create this image with all the characters. I think that the creator of this poster most likely over laid the character mages and adjusted them slightly order of the colours to appear stronger and stand put against the space background. The colours and the choice of image used for this poster connote and show relations to the sci fi genre.

The costuming used for this poster follows the conventions of a sci fi and fantasy film. The costuming worn by the characters include colours such as browns and tan colours. These colours connote earthy tones and relate to the locations included in the film.
This poster subverts the female archetype. The female character is in the centre of the poster which infers that she is the main character. Typically females are considered to be the damsal in distress and would not be associated with as being a hero. The costuming used in this image subverts the female archetypal clothing. The outfit that she is wearing is very practical and quite masculine which subverts the feminine archetype of staying home and having children.
The dark clothing worn by the villain subverts the the conventional costumes that are typically worn by a villain. The dark cloak worn by the villain in the background connotes the idea of power and evil. By using a mask for a prop for the villain this creates an eerie atmosphere and makes the audience wonder who is under the mask. It adds mystery and secret that continues throughout the film .

The star system is a predominant feature in this poster. The main stars of the film have been centred as the focal image of the poster in order for the audience to see who the main antagonist and protagonist are. Surrounding the characters in the centre of the poster are characters who are part of the main narrative and a play in the association what the key narrative.
This poster is a character poster in which the main characters who play a part in the narrative appear on the front and centre.

These are a few of the other posters that have been created for this film. These posters below are ones that are sisters to the main poster. These posters are ones that show case the main characters who help the storyline develop and progress throughout the film. These posters include less institutional information than the main one. These posters showcase a message through the characters rather than the information on the previous posters. These posters show case a weapon/prop overlay which signifies the characters personality and their character traits
The second type of poster that has been used to advertise for the film and draw in their target audience is a cartoon hand drawn poster style. I think that this poster is effective because it relates back to one of the original posters used for the previous films in the saga. The use of this style being repeated from the original films exhibits the uniformity of the films and shows to the audience they are the same franchise and are trying to keep the films along the same previous narrative.
